Note
AKS-47 designation began to be used when improved Kalashnikov's versions, notably the AKS-74, were introduced to denote the "Model 1947". This weapon was used by the Soviet armed forces and exported to numerous countries. It was license-produced in a number of countries. Also there is a number of clones and derivatives of this weapon.
The AKS-47 has similar design as the AK-47, except the stock. The original AK-47 has a solid wooden stock, while the AKS-47 has an underfolding metal stock, similar to that of the German MP-40 submachine gun. The stock can be collapsed for carrying in various confined spaces, such as armored vehicles and so on. Due to its stock the AKS-47 is lighter than the AK-47.
The AKS-47 is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon. It is basically a reverse-engineered version of the German StG.44 assault rifle, however with a number of modifications.
